Is it just me or can anyone else hear those sleigh bells jingle-ing, ring-ting tingle-ing, too?
..Anyway,with December fast approaching, the season of the festive shindig is upon us. For those who aren’t aware this snazzy phrase can encompass an array of events, from the annual work ‘do,’ a Christmas party with friends or even sipping on some sweet mulled wine at the local. But while it is meant to be the season of glad tidings and great joy, the question of what to actually wear to these events can leave you feeling less than merry at times. I’ve listed just a couple of the reasons below that we might be all too familiar with at this time of year:
“But it’s far too cold to wear a dress- and don’t even think I’m going to go bare legged, that’s utterly preposterous”
“I don’t want turn up and be too dressy, what does ‘smart casual’ even mean?!”
“I really like this outfit from [insert shop of choice] but I’d also really like to have money for next week’s food shop, so..”
Oh the dilemma of what to wear.
But instead of:
a) Panicking about what to wear and grabbing that questionable sequened dress you bought four years ago which doesn’t allow you to breathe let alone walk. or;
b) Refusing to leave the house, opting for pjs’s, a bottle of Baileys and watching Bridget Jones (does sound like a great kind of night tbf),
I’ve got ya covered.
Let us now consider option c) Using simple items you already own and jazzing them up with some accessories.
Before you know it, you’ve made a new outfit from pieces that are so much more wearable and it won’t cost you a single penny. Hark the herald angels sing!
As much as I love dressing up, I also want to wear something a little different and a lot more practical. I’ve spoken about the illusive phrase ‘jeans and nice top’ combo before, but I must say this festive shindig scenario is a great time to get these bad boys out. It’ll keep you a lot warmer than baring your legs in a dress, they’re comfortable to wear, plus they’re items we all own. All you will need: that nice pair of jeans that make you feel great when you pop them on and a top that doesn’t have any ketchup stains on. Hurrah!
I went for my trusty mom jeans from Urban Outfitters which have a ripped knee and raw hem detailing. How trendy. This beautiful lace top is, of course, from Zara. Their stuff is so good at the moment! It’s in a beautiful shade of forest green, which is one of those colours which looks great on everyone, PLUS it’s a great way to incorporate those festive colours in a more subtle way. I love the cut of the top too, the subtle bell sleeves and lace detailing make it look really expensive, when in reality it only cost £15.99!
Some people love handbags, some people love shoes- personally I love pyjamas, however this pair of strappy heels from New Look were too beautiful not to wear. I love the combination of jeans and heels because it completely transforms an everyday outfit into something a dressier without actually having to wear a dress.
And to complete the look I put my hair up in a messy bun and grabbed my clutch which is also a New Look favourite. I must have had it for 3 years now, but as the colours are so neutral it goes with everything and it turned out to match the shoes perfectly!
So, if you find yourself in the dilemma of what to wear, rather than recreating that scene from the Grinch, why not pull out some of your favourite pieces that make you feel comfy and confident and dress it up with a couple of snazzy accessories? Bob’s your uncle, fanny’s your aunt and YOU have just found a new favourite outfit!
You go, Glenn Coco.
